One lonely fixture tried its best to light a very long room, but let’s just say it wasn’t winning any awards. Corners were dark, vibes were off, and dinner parties? Not happening. So we rolled up our sleeves (and laid down a tarp that quickly became our cat’s new favorite nap spot) and got to work.

Let There Be Light (In Every Corner)

We added four can lights—one in each corner of the room—on a dimmer switch, because mood lighting is everything. Then we installed three more can lights over the dining table, each adjustable so we could spotlight the fireplace like it’s the star of the show. One light points down for dinner ambiance, and the other two act as gallery lighting. It’s dramatic, it’s functional, and it finally feels like the room knows what time of day it is.

DIY lighting tips

Ceiling Paint & Cat Supervision

Painting the ceiling was a group effort. By “group,” we mean us and our long-haired cat, who supervised from the tarp like a fluffy foreman. The fresh coat instantly brightened the space and made the room feel taller, cleaner, and less like it was stuck in a time warp.

Fireplace Fix-Up

The fireplace was giving off ‘looks nice but don’t touch’ energy, so we had it professionally inspected. Once we got the green light, we sealed up all the drafty holes and gave the inside a fresh coat of high-heat black paint. The outside brick got cleaned and painted black too, turning it into a sleek, modern focal point. Now it’s cozy and cat-proof. Not only are our animals safely contained, but they also love using the reflective fireplace doors as a mirror to admire themselves whenever they’re feeling extra fuzzy. And thanks to our lightweight dining room, the space easily adapts to whatever cozy setup we’re in the mood for.

Window & Door Upgrade

We replaced the old double-hung window with a new one that actually opens (what a concept!) and swapped out the door to the screened-in porch for one with a window. The extra light is a game-changer, and the cats now have a front-row seat to backyard wildlife drama. Squirrels beware.

A Room Ready for Company

This dining room went from dim and disjointed to bright and functional, with an eclectic personality. Whether we’re hosting dinner, sitting around the fire, or just reading a book in a corner chair, the space finally feels like it belongs in our home. And while the chandelier tried its best, we think it’s happy to have found a new home—with some backup
